"different types" of "Christians"
So I was reading my daily (2-5 times a day) digg.com articles, and came across one that had the headline of “Christian Guy Totally Owns Mormons”. You can see the video here:
http://www.break.com/index/christian-guy-totally-owns-mormons.html
At first I thought it would be interesting and intellectual, and some real ground breaking stuff would be done with some mormon evangelists. It was all well and good until about half way through.
The “christian” guy starts “dominating” the conversation, all the while mentioning several times that the mormons are the ones trying to dominate the discussion. The whole thing obviously takes a sharp turn from, “sure, let’s talk about this” to “you guys are wrong, I’m right, and you shouldn’t even be talking cause ya’ll are so stupid”.
He also mentions how they’re getting angry and agitated, when he’s clearly agitated himself; then when one of the mormons (not impolitely) say they’re “done” with the conversation, the other one tries to chime in with some more discussion and says something along the lines of “well, but I know…”; but that’s as far as he got. The “christian” guy interrupts and says “I don’t care what you know SIR! This conversation is over!” and then waves up his hand in their face and walks away.
Then later into the camera he gives this spill while his friends are all sitting around laughing:
“As you can clearly see, there’s not a man on the planet that can stand before us. This is evidence. It don’t matter if it’s the white boy that’s lost, that think they believe in Jesus, who really believe in Joseph Smith; or whether it’s the Israelite, who knows he’s an Israelite and he’s an anti-christ. The same thing happens, they can not stand here in front of us cause we’re the real ones. We’re the guys. You’ve just seen it live.”
Is this a Christian? Are they the “real ones”? Can no one stand against them or against God’s word? Can you see them giving themselves all (as though there’s any to be given) credit and glory. Is this the behavior and attitude and are these the actions and words of a Christian? The mormons were just two guys who are so lost, but why would they have ANY reason to become what the “christian guy” is? Why would they want to be like him, and belittle and hurt people who are lost, and then laugh about it; and then put it up online for the world to see! The very scriptures he speaks about and claims to know so well clearly condemn just about everything he did. No wonder more and more people are becoming hostile towards “Christianity”, when this is the proclaimed public face of it.
Where’s the speaking the truth in love? Where’s the being peaceable with all men as much as is possible? Where’s the humbleness and sense of compassion and love? Where’s the pursuing of things which make for peace and the building up of one another? This wasn’t anything like Paul reasoning daily with people in the temple to bring them to the knowledge of Christ. This was tearing people up, beating them down, spitting them out, and then telling the camera “as you can see”, we think we’re better than everyone else and we don’t care about anyone being “saved”. We just want to tell everyone how we’re saved and they’re not. We just want to prove to everyone else how wrong they are and then send them on their way.
Reflecting back, even the title doesn’t represent a Christian spirit. Are Christians supposed to go around “totally owning” people??
Great post!
I guess there’s attitude problem all around. But my take is that if you have a belief, and that belief is driving you to share that belief and spread it to the “unenlightened”, you better make sure that you are sufficiently sure, comfortable and knowledgeable in your belief before you do, and ready to recognize the limits of your beliefs, or else you’re just driven by an ideology, a way to see the world, not simply a belief.
We’re in a world with different people who have numerous beliefs that are shared, some that are different, and you will meet those who have none. Regardless, you have to learn how to live together, and I have not seen either participants of this little “skit” show that particular “living skill”, unfortunately. People skills go beyond being soft-spoken on one side or pointing out your fellow man’s argumentative flaws in a respectful fashion, regardless of one ’s individual style and delivery
Clearly, neither have shown the degree of understanding that would earn my respect.
