I got an iMac

So, I did it. And I’m even excited about it! I now own a 24″ iMac. We needed one to use the ProTools software easily with Daniel’s stuff, and I got one too, because I’ve researched a lot of good stuff out there to do application development on.

We bought one at Fry’s, and I ordered the other one online (they only had one left at Fry’s). So far far only have 4 immediate complaints about it:

  • OSX 10.4 (Tiger) was installed. The one at the store came with OSX 10.4, and you have to mail in to get the latest OS Leopard (10.5) as the CDs for it were not included. So I figured ordering online will get me all the latest stuff installed and it’ll be great. But I just finished opening it, and it’s 10.4. They just include the discs to upgrade to 10.5. Blah. And it takes 2 hours to install?? Why does Vista get so much negative press about install times?
  • There’s only 3 USB ports on the back. My self built Windows machine has 10, with connections for 12; and all native to the motherboard. And I understand the argument would be, “well just get a USB hub”. But that’s another purchase, and more data and power cables, and less bandwidth. It also appears even the Mac Pro only comes with 3 USB ports. In a time when it seems like EVERYTHING is USB; 3 ports just doesn’t seem like enough.
  • No surround sound connections. There’s 2 built in speakers, a headset jack and a mic jack. So much for any type of hard core gaming or movie watching.

Never thought my first high resolution monitor (1920 x 1200 pixels) would be a Mac either.

This will be an experience! I have pictures too that I’ll upload later. A few years ago I would have never imagined a need for any Apple products, but here we are. =) And I do miss an HDD light indicating hard drive activity. :(

More updates later…

You can also read more details later at http://www.yipdrew.com/blog (my new developer blog). I’ll include experiences with the new developer tools I plan on using.
