Launched a side project!

I’ve been developing a little site this weekend and decided to go ahead and go live! yipURL.com is up with basic functionality. It’s yet another URL minimizer (see the original, tinyurl.com), but I do have unique things in the works for it!

Try it out and give me your feedback! It looks best in Firefox or Safari! Maybe I’ll fix this soon for all the IE people, but not for now.

Now off to get some sleeeep!

Hurricane’s Over, Google Rocks!

So I posted to our blog here and twitter almost immediately when I started broadcasting a view of the hurricane action from here in Katy, and Google picked it up really fast. It wasn’t long before people had visited saying they found the video through Google, and according to Google Analytics, through this blog! Pretty awesome… gotta love the internet.

Traffic here spiked 1500% on Sept 12 and 2600% on Sept 13. I hope it helped some people who were worried about their homes or family know what was happening in Katy at the time. I wish I had more batteries so I could have kept it going during the thick of it! Damage to Katy from Hurricane Ike was light. Only one house in our neighborhood had any damage to it, and even that was just a few shingles on the roof being blow over.

Our power was out from about 3:30AM and was restored about 11:45am. We didn’t go very long without it compared to others. Our little tree in our front yard made it OK. The two Ash trees I planted in our backyard had just about all their leaves taken off, but are otherwise ok. The big elephant ear plants in our backyard are ripped to shreds though.

So Pam and I have now gone through our first hurricane! Definitely an experience.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who were more affected by Ike than we were.

Live Hurricane Ike From Katy, TX

For anyone interested, I’ll be doing a live broadcast of outside conditions here in Katy, TX as long as we have power and internet.

Jasmine is a true Jack Russell

Well, so we stopped by Brookshire Bros (little grocery store) on the way home from church yesterday cause our Kitty needed some wet food to take some medicine with. So of course, naturally, I want to get some kind of “treat” for Jasmine too. Pam ends up wanting to get her a toy (she’s torn up two in the last two weeks now that she’s had for forever).

So we are looking at the toy section (very small section), and decide on a $6 one; but then Pam see’s a purse toy. Naturally this is the more expensive $10 toy. So we get it; and within 2 hours she has all the fluff and the squeaker out and the toy is no more.

She’s been pretty good about just being content with biting the toys and not destroying them; but lately not so much. She wants that squeaker inside now (and the fluff) and that’s fun for her. Time to find some tough toys at Petsmart.

Looking for a web designer

So I put up another little job posting, trying to find someone that I can hand off site design to so I can focus on site functionality. This time I was pretty clear that I’m looking for someone local or in the U.S. But they send in resumes anyway (which I suppose is what you do when you’re looking for a job).

I meant to write a post about some resume tips after the last round of people applying. But here’s one: How about never put in political jabs at the end of your resume. (In this case a jab at Bush) Even if the majority of people “don’t like Bush”, does that mean the guy (or company) your sending your resume to hates him too? I suppose your chances could be greater than 50/50… but those still aren’t good odds. And I suppose your odds are even better given that the majority of people in my industry would not be conservative. But funny none the less.

Anyway, on to life… things are pretty good. Pretty busy too! More updates soon.
